What a phenomenal experience! I made dinner reservations for 4 people tonight after attending a Giants game. We felt a bit underdressed coming straight from the game, but the staff made us feel comfortable and welcomed. Let me start off by saying that the interior and decor were so homey and nostalgic. I loved every bit of it - from the silverware to the family photos on the wall when you first walk in. You can tell how much thought, effort and love was poured into not only the interior, but the food. We were also seated in the back and I loved having a view of the kitchen. The food...holy moly. We went with the Family Dinner option, but also added on the BBQ Whole Shrimp. The Family Dinner came with Boiled Peanuts, Savoy Cabbage Salad, Smothered Pork Chops, Whipped Potatoes, Greens, Cornbread and also Strawberry Shortcake. Everything was uh-mazing! I've never had boiled peanuts before and the dressing and whole herbs in the salad -- chef's kiss! Don't even get me started on the best Greens I've ever had and the homemade butter that came with the cornbread. Everything was just so so good! You can also add drink pairings to go along with the Family Dinner for an additional charge. They also do Brunch on Sundays! The staff and all around service was top notch. They do an amazing job of taking care of you and giving great recommendations. Do yourself a favor and check out Burdell. I promise you will not be disappointed! I cannot say enough great things! This is one of the best meals I've had in a long time and I will be counting down the days until we return!

We ate way too much food here. We got the collard greens, cornbread, the crudo, hen of the woods, the roast chicken with scrapple, the cookies, the shortcake, and the grilled fish. Everything was delicious. While I had mild notes (like how the sesame seeds don't help the cookies), I really enjoyed everything I ate. My family is from near Pennsylvania Dutch, so I've had real pig scrapple before, and I love it. While the scrapple here isn't really the same, it was the best thing I ate and was so good I'd go back just for that. The roast chicken with scrapple and greens dish is something I'd order again without thought. The flavor of the greens was nice and the roast chicken was great, but the scrapple was unlike anything I've had before (including pork scrapple). Strong recommend. The service was also great. I went with my parents and my dad talks a lot, but the waiters were very nice and answered every question we had and even asked us about our experience with scrapple and how theirs compared. Literally everything we ate was great, but I would recommend that the chef remove the seeds from the cookies as I don't think they help the dish in regard to texture. I will definitely be coming back.

Upscale, cozy, delicious, worth the price, excellent service - need I say more? Coming here was spontaneous on my part, but I was so pleasantly surprised. Vicky was our server and she knocked it out of the park with her recommendations of food and wine. I couldn't be happier with the quality of food and the way the flavors blended together. This place was a fun homage to tried and true recipes with and elevated spin. You feel like you're coming home with the simplicity of the menu, but it's so well done you can't help but be over the moon. Thank you Burdell and staff!

We came for Oakland Restaurant Week but boy am I glad my group overrode my vote to go with the prix fixe menu to order a la carte and try more of the menu - though the fried chicken looked and smelled out of this world as it came out to every table around us. I was quite worried when we walked in and the restaurant seemed small, but relieved to be led to a back area that was actually quite charming - and had a good view of the kitchen. Service was excellent, with every person we interacted with gracious about checking in on us and taking the time to remind us of each dish composition as they brought it out. We of course started with boiled peanuts, which were an elevated and well-executed classic. I was afraid the blistered brussel sprouts and crispy pig's ears would be too greasy, but it was just enough oil so that it didn't stick when charred. Chicken liver and waffle was rich but just the right amount that you don't get overwhelmed. I do wish there was more vinaigrette, maybe a little dish of it on the side, to add to taste if they didn't want the waffle to get soggy because the dish needed it to cut through the dense flavor of the liver and cornmeal. The pork neck was my favorite main. You can see the juiciness in the photo! The fresh mustard seed was a brilliant move to give it some bite. The other mains - fried catfish, guinea hen, and bone marrow stew - were all extremely well done, just paled in comparison slightly to the pork neck. I can absolutely see why Chef Davis has risen so quickly and am glad he's making people pay attention to the Oakland food scene!

I visited this restaurant on a Wednesday evening with friends, all of whom have backgrounds in the food industry. We booked an early reservation at 5 p.m. and were immediately struck by the venue's understated yet stylish décor, featuring rustic touches and a soft pink, floral theme. The menu was promising, showcasing a wide variety of dishes, and we opted to try a little of everything. The quality of service matched the high standard of the food; the servers were attentive and genuinely kind, with the chef even personally delivering some of our dishes, which was a thoughtful gesture. Of all the offerings, the pork neck and the petrale sole were particularly memorable. The pork was remarkably tender and flavorful, while the fish, served with fresh vegetables and a puree, was crafted to offer a perfect blend of flavors in each bite. The pricing was on the higher side, but given the quality of the food and the overall experience, it felt justified. This restaurant offers a level of southern cuisine that is both fulfilling and exceptionally well-prepared. Highly recommended for a satisfying meal that won't leave you feeling weighed down.

My friend and I came to Burdell during Oakland Restaurant Week and we were so happy with our decision. Firstly, the ambiance and decor are unparalleled. You feel as if you've stepped back in time to your grandparent's home in the absolute best way possible. There has clearly been so much thought and care put into all these details. The food was outstanding, I've been dreaming of it ever since I left. They were doing a special that included boiled peanuts, salad, fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, banana bread, and finished off with their pineapple right side up cake. The fried chicken was cooked to crispy perfection, well seasoned, and still so juicy. I would have loved to bathe in the mashed potatoes they were so rich and delicious. I could go on and on but there wasn't a singular item I was not over the moon with. I highly recommend checking Burdell out when you have a chance.
